How To Speed Up Your Metabolism

In Exercises, Fitness, Healthy Living, Motivation, Nutrition

Are you having a hard time losing or even maintaining weight? You’re eating food in the right amounts but it just isn’t reflected on your body?

The problem could be a slow metabolism.

Let’s face it, how fast your body burns calories can dictate your weight. Some people are just lucky to inherit a speedy metabolism, while others… not so much.

And what’s worse is, metabolism slows down after the age of 40. So ladies like you have to work extra hard to burn those calories off.

But don’t despair.

Although you can’t control your age or genetics, there are other ways to improve your metabolism:

1. Eat Plenty of Protein

If you have a slow metabolism, try replacing some carbs with lean protein. It will boost your metabolism and your body burns more calories digesting it.

It can also help you eat less by making you feel fuller and prevent you from overeating. Good sources of protein include lean beef, turkey, fish, white meat chicken, tofu, nuts, beans, eggs, and low-fat dairy products.

2. Drink More Water

This is probably one of the easiest ways to lose weight. It’s a no-brainer that people who drink water instead of sugary drinks are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off.

Water increases your metabolism and fills you up before meals. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism slows down.

Studies have shown that drinking 17 ounces of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour. How awesome is that? This effect may be even greater if you drink cold water rather than room temperature water–your body burns more calories to heat it up to body temperature.

If plain water is a little bland for you, spice it up with some lemon and mint!

3. Do a High-Intensity Workout

Mix up your exercise routine by adding in a few high-intensity workouts. This helps burn fats, even after your workout has finished.

Now, I know how hard it is to fit workout times into our busy schedules, but it’s important to find time for yourself. Invite your friends as well and make it a group activity. That way, you can keep each other accountable.

4. Weight Lifting

No surprise here! When you lift weights, you build muscle mass and when you increase your muscle mass, you boost your resting metabolism, making your body burn more calories. Remember: if you’re building strength, you are losing weight.

Just make sure to do a well-balanced strength-training program that targets the major muscle groups. If you’re interested, check out my programs here.

5. Eat Spicy Foods

Really now! Eating certain spices like peppers which contain capsaicin can boost your metabolism, and help you maintain a healthy weight.

While the effects of spices in your food may be quite small, they may provide you with an extra edge when combined with other metabolism-boosting methods.

A little bit of spice every now and then will go a long way, so go ahead and spice up those pasta dishes, chili, stews, and other meals with red pepper flakes (or other spices). Enjoy!

6. Drink Coffee

Good news for coffee lovers! Studies have shown that caffeine in coffee can boost metabolism and promote fat burning. Caffeine can even help you feel less tired and increase your endurance while exercising so you can continue to burn those extra calories.

But, be sure to only get black coffee as sugar won’t be a big help with weight loss.

Making these small lifestyle changes to your routine can increase your metabolism and help you lose weight.
